From Pastor Paul Theiss
Palm Sunday is Offering of Letters Sunday for hunger Bring the letters you have written to Palm Sunday worship to be added to letters others have written. We will dedicate these offerings of letters at a time of prayer at Palm Sunday worship. Read on for more information about how you can help eliminate severe hunger by writing letters to your legislators.
Help multiply all food and money donations made nationwide by ordinary folks to food banks and other nonprofits by at least a power of ten by writing your legislators on key domestic and international hunger issues. A few years ago the world was on track to eliminate severe hunger by 2030. Since then that goal has slipped. But we have the tools and the resources to make it happen!
Already this year, letters and calls to our legislators have prevented 70% cuts to the WIC (Women Infants and Children) nutrition and education program, which can reach 50% of infants in the U.S and their mothers. Against all odds, a Child Tax Credit to lift 500,000 children out of poverty passed the House.
This spring United in Grace joins hundreds of Christian congregations nationwide, coordinated by Bread for the World and supported by the ELCA, in addressing the following issues on a nonpartisan basis. We can write about any or all of these, using our own words and including personal experiences we may have had with hunger.
- Protect SNAP (CalFresh) from funding cuts and further restrictions.
- Help food stamp recipients buy more locally produced fresh food by cosponsoring the GusNIP Expansion Act, H.R.4856, and the GusNIP Improvement Act, S.2577.
- Reduce food waste by cosponsoring the Food Date Labeling Act, H.R.3159/S.1484.
- Strengthen food assistance for U.S. citizens in Puerto Rico by cosponsoring the Puerto
Rico Nutrition Fairness Act, H.R.253/S.949.
- Protect and strengthen the Food for Peace global nutrition program and allow additional flexibility to provide the most effective form of assistance in each local context.
Sample letters will be provided on Sunday and by clicking on the link Sample Letter.
Or you may send a personal letter online at the user-friendly Bread for the World website by clicking on the link Pass a Family-Friendly Farm Bill and follow the easy directions from there.
Please write your letters THIS WEEK! We plan to dedicate them in prayer on the 24th, Palm Sunday, so please bring them back to church if you write paper letters at home. After that we plan to deliver them in person to our legislators’ district offices.
If you write online, please let me know so we can include your letters in our prayer offering, and in our report to Bread for the World.
